WHAT’S OUR STORY?

Radio Wimborne Ltd was founded in 2013 and started broadcasting in January 2014 - and they said it would only last 6 months!

With the help of Wimborne BID who provided some seed funding and our very generous volunteers who have put so many hours of work into setting up and running the station, we have grown and developed into a successful community project.  No one gets paid at Radio Wimborne, we all do it for the love of it!  We now play a key part in the community at outside events and festivals - it's no longer just about 'air time' - it's about helping other volunteer run organisations to have their own successes.  We have worked with Bournemouth University media students, have hosted young people on their work experience placements, hosted live concerts and welcomed live performers into the studio.

We want to promote this town and the surrounding areas and enable local people to access news, music and events where they may otherwise not be able to attend in person.

We had been an online station since 2013 and in 2021 it was time to go FM and we were delighted about it!  You can tune into 94.6FM if you're local, or it's easy to listen online from anywhere in the world, just click on the links on the home page - you can then set these to favourites on your smart phone or PC, or you can ask Alexa or Google to simply play Radio Wimborne!

Our company is made up of three Directors but there are certainly other key members of our volunteer team who perform essential roles in addition to their presenting of shows.

"I have no doubt that the setting up and running of a genuinely local Community radio station (with 28 terrific volunteer presenters at the last count and growing) is one of the most empowering actions that any community can achieve.

Radio Wimborne with its reach across our part of Dorset has the ability to give our truly local community with all its wonderful diversity, including charities, clubs and associations, local events and businesses their own voice and allows a perspective on what is important to the people of our area - which our globalized and national media and commercial stations are not able to achieve.

We make the difference by filling that gap and at the same time enjoying what we do."

"I have been involved with Radio Wimborne from its inception 10 years ago.  I got involved through my involvement with Wimborne BID which is all about promoting the town to ensure it remains thriving and has a healthy economy.

We’re very lucky to have such a special market town with our Mediterranean square, café culture and amazing volunteer community.  This differentiates us from other areas in the region.

Radio Wimborne is all about sharing our good news with the local community, giving people, groups and charities a voice and those that work with us, a sense of belonging.  I get immense satisfaction from being involved in such a special project supporting the town and its people"

“Having lived in Wimborne for over 35 years, I’ve been able to appreciate the wonderful community, countryside and heritage of this part of the world.

Wimborne is a very special place! I have been involved in community radio for many years and its an absolute privilege to be part of Radio Wimborne’s dedicated volunteers and supporters, giving a voice to our wonderful local community and the amazing people who live and work here.

Respecting local diversity and supporting inclusion are key to what we do.  Radio Wimborne is the little community station with a big heart, whose mission is to
promote and champion all that is special to our community in this part of the world.”
